MAGNETS

THE IDEA

The first inspiration came from my love for ice cream and sweet treats. Each magnet will be a different formof ice cream and flavor.

THE PROCESS

ICE CREAM

With the ice cream magnet, I used my hands to shape the cone, so it was hollow on the inside. Then, I took two small ball of clay to form the ice cream scoops on top of the cone. I scored and slipped the bottom of the ice creams and the top of the cone, then blended them. I then used a needle tool to created the lattice pattern of the cone. Finally, I used a fettling knife and an x-acto knife to cut the cone in half to create the two ice creams.

For the milkshake magnet, I started with forming the glass. I used my hands to shape a hollowed out glass similar to a shape of a cone. I then used a ribbon tool to create the details of glass. To form the whipped cream, I used my hands to form a bowl-like shape. Then, I scored and slipped the bottom of the whipped cream and the top of the milkshake glass. Next, I rolled out a piece of clay and molded it to bend like a straw. Using a needle tool, I put made a little hole to replicate a straw; after, I scored and slipped the straw and whipped cream together. I molded the bottom of the glass with my hands and scored and slipped it to the glass. Finally, I used a fettling knife and an x-acto knife to split the milkshake in half.

Popsicle

First, I rolled out the clay to have an even base. Then, I used a square cookie cutter to create the base of the popsicle. With the square, I took the two corners with and molded them together to create the rounded top. After, I used the ribbon tool to create the little cutouts that most popsicles have. Then I took a small piece of clay and formed it as the popsicle stick. I scored and slipped the pieces together creating a popsicle.

THE FINAL PRODUCT

CHALLENGES + OBSTACLES

The major challenge I had to face was how to create the ice cream. I originally was trying to make half a cone and use a triangular base; however, that was not working and I needed to redirect. So, I created a 3-d ice cream, which then allowed me to create two ice cream cones. Another challenge I had to face was the shape of the popsicle. I wanted even and straight sides, but I also needed a rounded top. I originally just used my hands to mold the clay, but I found the cookie cutter would give me the best result. For future works, I can manipulate the ceramics tools to fit what I need for a project. I can be creative with creating works because there is no one right way to create.

THE VISION

The final product almost resembles my original vision. The shapes are exactly what I had imagined, but I took more creative liberty with the colors and flavors. For the popsicle, I ended up making a creamsicle rather than a chocolate popsicle. I kept the strawberry milkshake and mint chocolate chip ice cream. However, I ended up doing a fun Superman ice cream for the 2nd ice cream cone that was not originally planned. These magnets turned out better than I expected.
